Early Life & Education

Mavetera left an indelible mark on the acting scene with her portrayal of ‘Tendai Jari’ in Studio 263. Her exceptional acting skills garnered recognition in 2003 when she received the Best Actress award at the National Arts Merit Awards . Transitioning from acting, she ventured into hosting, starting a talk show titled ‘Timeout with Tatenda’ in 2005. The show addressed various issues affecting people’s daily lives, providing a platform for discussions and conflict resolution. Despite its engaging content, the show concluded after just one season. In 2013, Mavetera returned to acting, starring in the film ‘The Zimbabwe I Know,’ produced by the acclaimed Nigerian star Ejike Asiegbu.

Personal Life

Raised in Gweru, Tatenda Mavetera is happily married to Edmore, and together, they share the joys of parenthood with their two children, Dariene and Daniel.

Political Career

In 2018, Tatenda Mavetera entered the political arena, securing the position of Member of Parliament for Seke-Chikomba constituency. At the age of 34, she became the youngest woman in the present Zimbabwean parliament. Notably, Mavetera’s influence extends beyond her parliamentary role, as she holds the position of Assistant Speaker and occasionally acts as Speaker of the National Assembly in the absence of the designated speakers.

As a parliamentarian, Mavetera has been a vocal advocate for women’s and youth rights. Her focus includes facilitating access to land, economic opportunities, and political participation for the youth. Additionally, she has passionately championed for the arts sector, emphasizing the need for government support to enhance the lives of those dependent on the industry.

Controversies

In 2008, she found herself facing legal proceedings over accusations of aiding her sister, Charlotte Chivavarirwa, in the alleged kidnapping of a Harare woman. The charges stemmed from suspicions of an affair between the victim and Chivavarirwa’s husband, triggered by the discovery of an incriminating SMS from the victim’s phone.
