Herbert Maruwa Biography | Coaching Qualifications | Coaching Career and Clubs Coached

This is the biography of Herbert Maruwa, commonly known as “Jompano,” a Zimbabwean football coach with extensive experience in local and regional football. Over the years, he has coached several clubs and worked in youth development, grooming numerous talented players.

Coaching Qualifications

Maruwa holds a CAF A Licence, which he obtained in 2014 during his tenure as the Dynamos juniors coach. Under his mentorship, the junior team produced notable players, including:

  • Partson Jaure
  • Blessing Moyo
  • King Nadolo
  • Leeroy Murape
  • Farai Mupasiri
  • Tichaona Mabvura
  • Carlos Rusere

His focus on nurturing young talent has contributed significantly to the Zimbabwean football landscape.

In 2020, Maruwa was selected to attend a UEFA B coaching course in Germany, further enhancing his technical expertise and strategic approach to coaching.

Coaching Career

Black Rhinos
Maruwa joined Black Rhinos in 2017 as head coach, replacing Stanford “Stix” Mtizwa, who did not meet the CAF A Licence requirements. However, his stint ended abruptly in July 2022 after allegations of “unbecoming behaviour during match days,” which the club claimed damaged its corporate image.

Mbabane Highlanders (Swaziland)
Maruwa briefly coached the Mbabane Highlanders in Swaziland but parted ways with the club in March 2017 after a mutual agreement with the board.

Dynamos Football Club
Maruwa served as a development coach and was part of Callisto Pasuwa’s successful backroom staff. His experience with Dynamos juniors solidified his reputation as a youth coach.

Hartley
In 2015, Maruwa coached Eastern Region Division One side Hartley before leaving for Swaziland.

Dynamos Head Coach

On December 13, 2022, Maruwa was appointed head coach of Dynamos, succeeding Tonderai Ndiraya. However, his tenure was short-lived as he was dismissed in August 2023 for failing to meet a performance target set by the club.

Harare City and Move to TelOne

In 2024, Maruwa joined Harare City and enjoyed an impressive unbeaten start in the Division One title race, with six wins and one draw. Despite the strong start, financial issues at the club, including unpaid remuneration, led to dissatisfaction.

In May 2024, Maruwa left Harare City to take over as head coach of Premier Soccer League returnees TelOne, replacing Tendai Chikuni.
