This is the biography of Knowledge Musona, one of the most prolific and influential footballers in Zimbabwean history. He has played for various clubs in South Africa, Germany, Belgium, and Saudi Arabia, as well as captaining the national team in the Africa Cup of Nations. He is known for his speed, skill, and scoring ability.

 

Early Life and Education

Knowledge Musona was born on 21 June 1990 in Norton, Mashonaland West, Zimbabwe. He attended Lord Malvern High School in Harare. His younger brother, Walter Musona, is also a professional footballer and plays for FC Platinum.

Musona started his football career at Manyame Football Club before moving on to join Haka United. He then joined Aces Youth Soccer Academy, which is well known for producing some of the country’s best and most promising footballers.

In 2009, he moved to South Africa and signed for Kaizer Chiefs, where he scored 19 goals in 49 league appearances. He was an instant hit in the Super Diski and attracted the attention of various European clubs.

Musona signed for German club 1899 Hoffenheim in 2011 but did not replicate his outstanding performances at Amakhosi. He was loaned to Augsburg, Kaizer Chiefs, and Oostende in the following years.

In 2015, he signed a permanent deal with Oostende, where he scored 35 goals in 104 league matches. He joined Andile Jali at the Belgian club..

Musona then joined another Belgian club, Anderlecht, in 2018, after interest from several clubs. He was loaned to Lokeren and Eupen in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons respectively.

In 2021, he moved to Saudi Arabia and signed for Al-Tai FC, where he scored 14 goals and registered 17 assists in 53 appearances. He mostly played as a midfielder for Al Tai.

In 2023, he joined Al-Riyadh on a one-year contract. He has scored one goal in nine appearances so far for his new club. In July 2023, the club named him captain.

Musona made his debut for the Zimbabwe national team on 27 January 2010 in a friendly match against South Africa, which Bafana Bafana won 3-0. He then made his competitive Warriors debut in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia on 5 September 2010.

He became the captain of the Warriors in 2017 and led them to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored two goals in four matches. Musona scored 24 goals in 51 international appearances, making him the third-highest scorer for Zimbabwe.

In 2022, he announced his retirement from international football, citing personal reasons and the need to focus on his club career. He thanked his teammates, coaches, fans, and the Zimbabwe Football Association for their support and wished them well for the future.

Musona is married to Daisy Rutendo Takundwa, whom he wedded on 28 May 2016.He is also involved in charity work and has donated football kits and equipment to various schools and clubs in Zimbabwe.

 

Controversy

Musona’s career in Belgium was not without controversy. In 2016, he admitted to authorities that he had placed bets on matches he was playing in, which is illegal and could lead to match-fixing. However, he claimed that he did not influence the outcome of any game and that he only bet small amounts for fun.

Musona was likely to get a fine for his actions, but no criminal charges were filed against him. He was also caught up in another match-fixing investigation in 2018, which involved several Belgian clubs and agents. His former club Anderlecht was among those raided by law enforcement agents. Still, Musona was not implicated in the probe. He maintained his innocence and continued to play for his club and country.
