This is the biography of Moses Chunga, a retired Zimbabwean footballer and veteran coach who has managed several local teams.
Early Life
Moses Chunga was born on 17 October 1965 in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe). His parents were of Malawian descent. He left school at the age of 14 after a dispute with his teacher.
Moses Chunga Playing Career
Dynamos F.C.
Chunga began his professional career with Dynamos F.C. in 1983. He played as a midfielder and quickly became a key player for the team. In 1986, he was the Soccer Star of the Year. He was with his elder brother Kembo Chunga and younger brother Dickson Chunga at Dynamos.
In December 1986, Chunga travelled to England for trials with Nottingham Forest. He impressed the coach, but the opportunity was lost when he failed to follow a simple instruction to pass the ball.
Eendracht Aalst
In 1988, Chunga moved to Belgium to play for Eendracht Aalst. He spent four years with the club, gaining valuable international experience.
Zimbabwe National Team
Chunga played for the Zimbabwe national football team from 1987 to 1991 and is considered one of the Country’s greatest midfielders.

Coaching Career
Dynamos F.C.
Chunga started his coaching career with Dynamos. Moses Chunga had multiple stints as the head coach of Dynamos F.C. He first took charge of the team in the early 2000s. He returned to coach Dynamos again in 2004, where he played a crucial role in saving the team from relegation.
Shabanie Mine
In 2002, Chunga was appointed head coach of Shabanie Mine. He helped the team improve their performance in the league.
Gunners F.C.
In 2009, Chunga won his first managerial honours with Gunners F.C., leading them to the Zimbabwe Premier League title. He left the club before the start of the following season but returned in 2011.
Shooting Stars
Moses Chunga joined Shooting Stars in January 2010. His tenure with the team was part of his broader coaching career, where he focused on developing young talent and improving team performance. He left mid-2010.
CAPS United
Chunga also had a stint with CAPS United, one of Zimbabwe’s most popular football clubs. He managed CAPS United from 2010 to 2011. His tenure ended in June 2011, shortly after Highlanders knocked the team out of the quarter-finals of the BancABC Sup8r.
Buffaloes F.C.
Moses Chunga also coached Buffaloes F.C. from 2014 to early 2015. He resigned from his position on 11 March 2015.
Harare City F.C.
Chunga had a brief period with Harare City F.C., from May to November 2016, where he focused on building a strong team dynamic.
Moses Chunga Honours and Recognition
In December 2012, Chunga was honoured by his former club, Eendracht Aalst and the City Council of Aalst. He was invited to sign the Golden Book of Aalst, the community’s highest civic honour.
Chunga holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season in post-independence Zimbabwe. He netted 46 goals in the 1986 season, a feat that remains unsurpassed to this day.
Moses Chunga Personal Life
Moses Chunga was born to parents of Malawian descent in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe). He has siblings who have also played football. His brother, Dickson Chunga, was a footballer, and they shared a passion for the sport.
Chunga is private when it comes to his family. He has two sons, Moses Jnr and Madalitso, and a daughter, Limbikani. Moses Jnr is from his first marriage, while the other two are with his second wife, who is a teacher.
He once won a Parent of the Year Award years ago when his children were still at Selborne Routledge Primary School in Harare.
Chunga has two brothers and a sister, and he lives with a nephew at his home in Waterfalls.
