This is the biography of Nyasha Liberty Mushekwi, a Zimbabwean professional footballer who plays as a striker or midfielder for China League One club Yunnan Yukun. Known for his versatility and goal-scoring ability, Mushekwi has had a successful career across multiple countries.

 

Early Life and Education

Mushekwi was born on 21 August 1987 in Harare. He attended Blackiston Junior School for his primary education. He then went to Allan Wilson High School and Churchill Boys High School. He was an all-round sportsman in school, excelling in basketball, rugby, and athletics.

He began his football journey with CAPS United in Zimbabwe, where he quickly made a name for himself. In the 2009 season, he won the top scorer award after netting 21 league goals. His impressive performances caught the attention of South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, leading to his move in 2010.

At Mamelodi Sundowns, Mushekwi continued to excel, becoming the second-best goalscorer in the 2010-11 Premier Soccer League season. His success in South Africa led to a loan spell at Belgian club K.V. Oostende for the 2013-14 season. Unfortunately, an injury hampered his time in Belgium, and he returned to Mamelodi Sundowns, only to find that the club had used up its foreign player slots.

In 2015, Mushekwi went on trial with Danish club Hobro IK but ultimately signed with Swedish club Djurgårdens IF on a six-month loan deal. His time in Sweden was followed by a significant move to China, where he joined Dalian Yifang (now Dalian Pro) in December 2015.

Mushekwi’s impact in China was immediate. He became the top goal scorer for Dalian Yifang in three consecutive seasons and played a crucial role in helping the team win the League One title in 2017. Despite facing injuries, Mushekwi’s resilience and determination earned him a reputation as one of the most important players in the club’s history.

 

Zhejiang Pro and Yunnan Yukun

In July 2019, Mushekwi joined Zhejiang Pro (now Zhejiang Greentown) after his performance at Dalian Pro was affected by injuries. He continued to contribute to the team’s success, and in February 2024, he moved to Yunnan Yukun, where he currently plays.

Nyasha Mushekwi International Career

Mushekwi made his international debut for Zimbabwe on 3 March 2010 and has since earned 19 caps, scoring six goals. His contributions to the national team have been valuable, although he has faced competition for a regular spot.

Mushekwi tied the knot with his Swedish sweetheart, Arsema Ghebrehiwot, in a ceremony held in Sweden in 2020. The couple had been engaged for some time before officially getting married.

Mushekwi is known for his dedication to the sport and his philanthropic efforts. He has been involved in various charitable initiatives, including donating buses to churches and supporting local communities in Zimbabwe. Mushekwi donated a luxury R1.8-million bus to his former club, CAPS United, in November 2019 as a token of appreciation for their role in his development. The bus was intended to help the club with transportation needs.
