ZESA Initiates Mass Disconnections Over Unpaid Bills

Zimbabwe’s national power utility, ZESA, has taken a firm stance against defaulting customers, initiating a widespread mass disconnections drive as a consequence of outstanding bills.

Commencement of Disconnection Exercise

In a recent public notice issued by ZESA subsidiary, the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission & Distribution Company (ZETDC), the organisation confirmed the commencement of the disconnection exercise. The notice, following a prior warning issued on December 15th, 2023, clearly states the action being taken against defaulting customers.

ZETDC emphasised,

“Customers are being requested to settle their bills in full. Failure to do so will leave the organisation with limited options but to disconnect supplies of all such accounts without further notice.”

Urgent Call for Settlement

The notice further urged affected customers to proactively resolve their outstanding balances to avoid disconnection.

The organisation highlighted the necessity for immediate action, urging individuals to engage with their account managers, nearest credit control offices, or client service centres for clarifications and settlement procedures.

Gratitude Amidst the Exercise

While emphasising the significance of bill settlement, ZETDC extended gratitude towards valued clients for their cooperation throughout this process.

The company underscored its commitment to providing quality service to its customers but maintained that settling outstanding dues remained an imperative step.

A ZETDC representative stated,

“ZETDC would like to thank its valued clients for their cooperation during this exercise as the company endeavors to offer you the much-desired service that you deserve.”

Reactions and Implications

The announcement has stirred varied reactions among consumers. Some express concern over the abruptness of the disconnections, fearing the inconvenience and impact on their daily lives.

Potential Consequences

The disconnection drive raises concerns about the potential consequences on various sectors, including households, businesses, and essential service providers reliant on uninterrupted power supply.
