This is the biography of the late Retired Brigadier-General Michael Chaminuka, a Zimbabwean war veteran and former member of the Zimbabwe National Army.

Background

Chaminuka was born on January 2, 1962, in Nkani Village under Chief Nematombo in Hurungwe, Mashonaland West Province. He was married to Dr. Lillian Chaminuka, and they had five children – two sons and three daughters, including Dr. Michelle Chaminuka.

Education

Chaminuka attended Kapfunde Primary School in Hurungwe in 1969. He then proceeded to Columbus Secondary School in Honde Valley, Manicaland Province, for Form One and Two between 1975 and 1976. Following the closure of the school by the Ian Smith regime, he moved to St John’s Chikwaka Secondary School to complete his Form Two and began Form Three in 1977.

Second Chimurenga Contribution

Chaminuka’s involvement in the Second Chimurenga, the Zimbabwean liberation struggle, began after the closure of the school by the Ian Smith regime.

Career in the Zimbabwe National Army

In September 2013, President Mugabe promoted Chaminuka from the rank of colonel to the rank of brigadier general, in accordance with section 15(1)(b) of the Defence Act (Chapter 11:02). The promotion was effective from September 5. Chaminuka had previously served as Constantino Chiwenga’s personal staff officer when Chiwenga was the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander.

Death

Chaminuka died at the Trauma Centre in Harare at around 7 pm on Saturday, following a short illness. He was 62 years old at the time of his passing.
