Wedza church shooting
In January 2023, Muvevi went to an apostolic church shrine in Wedza along with Shupikai Muvevi. He wore all black clothing, against the church’s rules, and was given a white robe to cover himself. During the service, Muvevi retrieved a pistol from his parked vehicle and shot the preacher, Crispen Kanerusine, in the head. This caused the congregants to flee and call the police.
Confrontation with police & Shooting Dead Inspector Maxwell Hove
The Officer in Charge of Wedza Police Station, Inspector Maxwell Hove, assembled a response team to investigate the shooting. They confronted Muvevi on the roadside near the shrine. Muvevi opened fire on the officers, killing Hove with three shots to the head. He also shot Constable Tendai Mugova in the stomach and pelvis, seriously injuring him.

After the confrontation, Muvevi drove to Murambinda business centre where he shot and killed Munashe Munjani after a brief conversation. The next day, he went to Mutare Boys High School and fired three shots at the caretaker who had refused to give him food, but missed.
Escape And Eventual Arrest
Jaison Muvevi was arrested by unarmed civilians on 16 January 2023 while crossing into Mozambique to escape paying for his crimes. He was confronted and wrestled to the ground by a crowd during the brave citizen’s arrest.

Muvevi, a seasoned Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer, was highly regarded by his colleagues for his exceptional training and ability to execute operations with ease, without being vulnerable to attacks.
Despite being pursued by law enforcement agents, Muvevi demonstrated his superior police training by employing diversion tactics to evade capture.
During a visit to Mutare, he procured a new work suit from Wasu Shopping Mall.

He is charged with four counts of murder and two other counts of attempted murder after he also allegedly shot and injured a police officer in Hwedza before shooting at another man in Mutare, whom he narrowly missed.

Mental Health Assessment
In the aftermath of the horrific events, Muvevi’s mental state became a matter of concern. His lawyers made an application to the court for a mental examination. This application was not opposed by the State, leading to Muvevi being examined by two psychiatrists.
Being Declared Mentally Unfit for Trial
The two psychiatric evaluations reached the same conclusion: Jaison Muvevi was mentally disturbed at the time of the murders. Based on these findings, Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi ruled that Muvevi was mentally unfit to stand trial. Instead, he was committed to Chikurubi Psychiatric Hospital for treatment.
Does This Mean Charges Against Muvevi Have Been Dismissed
While the legal system has determined that Muvevi is not fit to stand trial, it is anticipated that he will receive treatment at the psychiatric hospital. Upon being deemed mentally fit, he is expected to be released.
