Scandal

In May 2023, Davis Marapira faced allegations of pressurising a 19-year-old beneficiary of his scholarship to have relations with him. He was accused of pressuring the young woman for sexual favours and attempting to lure her to his hotel room. The Masvingo Mirror published messages in which Marapira expressed frustration when his advances were repeatedly rejected.

Marapira had been sponsoring the teenager’s A-Level education and continued to support her when she enrolled at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo. However, the support had become inconsistent, which Marapira attributed to financial pressures related to election preparations for the Zanu PF primary elections held in March.

The young woman, however, suggested that the withholding of financial support was due to her refusal to meet Marapira in his hotel room, stating, “Sir, it’s not only about elections but love as well.”
