This is the biography of Dr Sithembiso Gile Gladys Nyoni, a Zimbabwean politician. She is the current Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife. Nyoni has held various ministerial positions throughout her career, including Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises Development and Minister of Women and Youth Affairs.
Early Life and Education
Sithembiso Nyoni was born on 20 September 1949 in Silobela District, Midlands Province, Zimbabwe. She completed her primary education at St Patrick’s Mission in Gweru in 1961. She then attended St David’s Bonda Secondary School in Nyanga, where she completed her secondary education in 1966. Growing up, she was a member of the Girl Guides
Nyoni pursued higher education at the University of Zimbabwe, earning a Diploma in Rural and Social Development. She also holds an Advanced Diploma in Adult Education and a Master of Arts in Rural Social Development. In 2018, Sithembiso Nyoni graduated with a doctorate in sustainable models of development from the Zimbabwe Open University.
Dr Sithembiso Nyoni Early Career and Political Activism
Nyoni began her political activism in 1975 while at the University of Zimbabwe. She was involved in the fight against racial discrimination and the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) by Prime Minister Ian Smith. After Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, Nyoni continued her political career. In 1995, she joined the cabinet as Deputy Minister of Public Construction and National Housing.

Dr Sithembiso Nyoni Ministerial Roles
In 2002, Nyoni was appointed Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises Development. She was re-appointed to the same ministry in 2005 after being appointed as a non-constituency Member of Parliament.
In 2017, President Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed Nyoni as the Minister of Women and Youth Affairs. She held this position until she was appointed Minister of Industry and Commerce in 2023. Month later, she was reassigned to the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife.

Sithembiso Nyoni is married to Peter Baka Nyoni. The couple has four children and three grandchildren.
