Early Life and Education
Father Fidelis Mukonori was born on 15 July 1947 in Zimbabwe. Father Mukonori joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), where he underwent his initial training and formation in Zimbabwe. He did his primary and secondary education at Chishawasha Seminary in then Salisbury (now Harare).
During his early years, he stood against racial segregation and inequality. His activism began in his school days when he and his colleagues rebelled against unequal treatment at their Catholic mission school.
For his higher education, Father Mukonori attended Arrupe College in Zimbabwe, which is a Jesuit school specialising in philosophy and humanities. He furthered his theological studies at institutions abroad, including a period at the Gregorian University in Rome, which is one of the leading Jesuit universities in the world.

The Jesuit was ordained as a priest and began his ministry in Zimbabwe in 1977. He has served in various capacities within the church, always focusing on uplifting and supporting his community.
Father Fidelis Mukonori’s Role in Social Justice
One of Father Mukonori’s most notable contributions has been his work in social justice. His efforts have included advocating for the poor and marginalised, promoting education, and working towards peace and reconciliation in the country.
Before 1980, Father Mukonori worked with the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Rhodesia, documenting details of the civil war. The commission then passed these to Robert Mugabe during the struggle against Ian Smith’s regime.
He has served as the Executive Director of the Centre for Peace Initiatives in Africa and has been a member of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace since 1974.
In 1979, he played a background role in the Lancaster House Conference, which led to the end of Rhodesia and the birth of independent Zimbabwe. He was also a Constitutional Commissioner who helped draft Zimbabwe’s new Constitution.
As a Provincial of the Jesuits in Zimbabwe, Father Mukonori was a spiritual leader and a mentor to many, including the late President Robert Mugabe. His proximity to political figures has placed him in a unique position to facilitate significant events.
