This is the biography of Makanakaishe Charamba, a Zimbabwean sprinter who competed in the men’s 200 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Parents

He is the son of Zimbabwe presidential spokesperson George Charamba and Rudo-Grace Charamba.

Age

Makanakaishe Charamba was born on 2 December 2001.

Education

Charamba initially focused on playing rugby and hockey while attending Kutama College for high school. He later transferred to Hillcrest College.

Career

Charamba has achieved significant success in his athletic career:

  • He won a Zimbabwean national gold medal in the 200-meter run and a silver medal in the 100-meter run.
  • He was the Confederation of School Sport of Southern Africa (COSSASA) 100m champion in 2018 and the Manicaland provincial 100m and 200m champion from 2018 to 2020.
  • He was named Hillcrest College Sportsman of the Year and best male track & field athlete in 2019.
  • At Carson-Newman University, he was named the 2022 SAC Men’s Track & Field Freshman of the Year and the 2022 SAC Outdoor Championship Athlete of the Meet.
  • In his freshman year at Carson-Newman, he ran a school record 200 metres time of 20.41 seconds at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and was named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Male Track Athlete of the Year.
  • The following year, he won the men’s 100 metres and 200 metres titles in wind-assisted times of 10.02 and 20.19 seconds at the NCAA Division 2 Championships in Pueblo, Colorado.
  • Charamba has since transferred to Auburn University, where he met the qualifying standard for the 2024 Paris Olympics after running 20 seconds flat in the 200m final at the Southeastern Conference championship in Florida.
  • Charamba’s personal best in the 200 metres is 19.95 seconds, which he achieved in Lexington, Kentucky.
  • In 2024, he finished fifth at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships 200 metres in Eugene, Oregon with a time of 20.20 seconds.
