This is the biography of Raisedon Baya, a prominent Zimbabwean playwright, director, and arts administrator. With a career spanning over two decades, he has significantly contributed to the development of theatre and arts in Zimbabwe. His work often focuses on social issues, using the arts as a platform for dialogue and change.
Early Life and Education
Raisedon Baya was born in 1973 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and grew up in Makokoba. He attended Sobukhazi Secondary School. As a child, he wanted to become a lawyer. He never imagined becoming a writer, as English was not his strongest point. Baya was very good in mathematics and science subjects. However, while in A-Level, he saw his brother ina play on stage mesmerising the audience. That moment ignited his passion for writing.
Raisedon Baya Career
Baya’s professional career began in the 1990s. He quickly established himself as a talented playwright and director. His early works were well-received, earning him recognition within the local theatre community. One of his notable early plays was “The Crocodile of Zambezi,” which highlighted issues of power and corruption. The play’s success marked the beginning of a prolific career.
Raisedon Baya Notable Works and Achievements
Throughout his career, Baya has written and directed numerous plays that tackle various social issues. Some of his most notable works include “Super Patriots and Morons,” “The Taking,” and “Madmen and Fools.” These plays have been performed locally and internationally, receiving critical acclaim for their powerful storytelling and social commentary.
He has published a novel, Mountain of Silence, an anthology of plays, Tomorrow’s People, and features in an anthology of folktales, Around The Fire – Folktales from Zimbabwe. Some of his stories appear in Short Writings from Bulawayo II and III, and Where to Now? Short Stories from Zimbabwe, and his short story ‘The Initiation’ is to appear in Moving On and Other Zimbabwean Stories.
Two of his plays, Super Patriots & Morons and The Crocodile of Zambezi, are banned in Zimbabwe.

Baya has worked with African giants like Wole Soyinka, Mbongeni Ngema, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o and Chenjerai Hove.
He has won the National Arts Merit awards (NAMA) multiple times for writing, directing and producing. In 2009, Baya was a recipient of the Oxfam Novib/PEN Award for Freedom of Expression.
Raisedon Baya Arts Administration and Advocacy
Beyond his creative work, Baya is an active arts administrator and advocate. He has held various leadership roles within arts organisations, including the Intwasa Arts Festival KoBulawayo, one of Zimbabwe’s leading cultural festivals. Under his leadership, the festival has grown significantly, providing a platform for local and international artists to showcase their work.
Baya is former teacher and National Arts Council employee who worked at ZBCtv as a producer and commissioning editor.
