This is the biography of Trevor Ncube, a Zimbabwean entrepreneur and newspaper publisher who is the Chairman of Alpha Media Holdings.
Early Life and Education
Trevor Vusumuzi Ncube was born on September 9, 1962, in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. His upbringing in Zimbabwe significantly influenced his later career choices. Ncube attended Mzilikazi High School in Bulawayo. He pursued higher education at the University of Zimbabwe, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Economic History.
He completed the Said Business School, University of Oxford, Advanced Management and Leadership Programme in June/July 2009. In 2012, he completed the Oxford University High Performance Leadership Programme. In 2017, he completed the Strategic Leadership programme at Said Business School.
Trevor Ncube Media Career
Ncube began his career as a teacher before transitioning into journalism and media. In 1989, he became an assistant editor at The Financial Gazette and swiftly rose to the position of executive editor by 1991. In 1995, Ncube faced a pivotal moment when he was fired by The Financial Gazette due to a disagreement over his tough stance against Robert Mugabe’s autocratic rule. Being fired turned out to be a blessing, as it propelled him toward greater independence and impact.

Trevor Ncube Media Ownership
After his dismissal at the Financial Gazette, Trevor Ncube founded Alpha Media Holdings (AMH). AMH owns four newspaper titles in Zimbabwe, namely NewsDay (national daily), Southern Eye (regional daily), The Zimbabwe Independent (business weekly) and The Standard (Sunday). Ncube is also a controlling shareholder and chairman of Heart & Soul Broadcasting Services (HStv).
From 2002 until 2017, Ncube held the main shareholder position at the Mail & Guardian, a prominent South African publication. His influence extended beyond Zimbabwe’s borders, shaping media narratives in both countries.
Ncube wears multiple hats. He hosts, produces, and owns the “In Conversation with Trevor” podcast, primarily published on YouTube. The podcast showcases interviews with professionals who have excelled in their respective fields.
Board Positions
- 2004 to 2008 – President of Print Media South Africa (PMSA).
- 2008 – appointed to the board of Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed MoneyWeb as an independent non-executive director.
- 2013/14 – chairman of the Davos-based World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Agenda Council on Informed Societies.
- 2013/14 – member of the Hivos International Supervisory Board.
- 2014/15 – member of WEF’s Global Agenda Council on Africa.
- Chairman of the African Media Initiative (AMI), a continent-wide organisation focusing on strengthening the sector viability and enhancing its professionalism.
- Fellow of The Aspen Institute and Fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI).
Trevor Ncube Personal Life
Ncube is married to Nyaradzo. They have two children: a son named Keith and a daughter named Maya. In his free time, he loves reading books and adult colouring. He and his wife enjoy listening to music and drinking wine.
