This is the biography of Junior Makunike a Zimbabwean professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Simba Bhora Football Club in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
Family Background
Junior Makunike’s uncle the late Blessing “Yogo Yogo” Makunike, was a legendary Zimbabwean midfielder. Blessing played for Caps United and had a brief stint with FK Javor Ivanjica in Serbia in 2002. Tragically, Blessing passed away in 2004 in a car accident near Norton, along with teammates Shingirayi Arlon and Gary Mashoko, while returning from a Caps United league match.

Makunike grew up in Mzilikazi, Bulawayo, in a football-loving family. His father, Jeffrey Makunike, is a retired goalkeeper who played in the ZIFA Southern Region Division One League. His mother, Thandeka Moyo, is a Highlanders FC fan, while his father supports Dynamos FC.
Education and Early Career
Makunike’s football talent emerged early, leading him to sign with Bantu Rovers’ junior team and later joined the Highlanders junior setup. Despite Highlanders’ attempt to secure him on a five-year contract at age 12, his parents declined due to concerns about the contract’s duration.
He briefly joined a community team in Makokoba before enrolling at Mpopoma High School.
Makunike’s talent gained national recognition during the Copa Coca-Cola tournament in Harare, where he played for Mpopoma High. His performance impressed Norman Taruvinga, the Prince Edward (PE) High Academy coach. He was selected for a squad representing Zimbabwe in Namibia and subsequently offered a scholarship to PE High.
At PE Academy, he further developed his skills and caught the attention of Dynamos FC scouts, leading to his eventual signing with the club.

Club Career
Dynamos FC
Makunike made his professional debut under coach Tonderai Ndiraya at Dynamos.
Simba Bhora FC
In 2023, Makunike transferred to Simba Bhora FC, where he reunited with coach Ndiraya. He played a key role in the club’s success, helping Simba Bhora secure the Premier Soccer League title in the 2024 season.

International Career
Makunike earned his first call-up to the Zimbabwe national team, the Warriors, in March 2024. He was part of the squad coached by Norman Mapeza, that competed in a four-team tournament in Malawi from March 18-26, 2024.
