Gary Tight, whose birth name is Gary Muponda, is a talented Afro-pop artist, following in the footsteps of his father, the renowned Zimbabwean Afro-Jazz musician, Willom Tight.

Gary gained widespread recognition across the country as a mentee of the late Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi.

Gary was born on 2 December 1994.

Early Life And Education

Gary Tight was born into a family of three, and his musical journey began at a young age, with his father, Willom Tight, providing early encouragement.

He attended Churchill Boys High School in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he completed his GCE Ordinary Level and also joined the school’s Churchill Jazz Band, further nurturing his passion for music.

Musical Career

Throughout his musical journey, Gary Tight achieved several notable milestones. In 2005, he had his debut concert performance at the Artists Against Poverty Festival Campaign in Zimbabwe.

In 2016, he paid tribute to one of his musical influences, the late Sam Mtukudzi, with a remarkable performance.

The following year, in 2017, Tight collaborated with the legendary Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi on his single ‘Ndizarurire.’

Additionally, in December 2018, he had the honor of being an opening act for Zimbabwean veteran musician Thomas Mapfumo’s ‘The Peace Tour.’

Controversies

Drug Addiction

Gary was open about his struggle with drug addiction, which he declared on social media. He labeled his experience as ‘bad’ and took the opportunity to advise fellow musicians and the youth to refrain from drug use.

The Oliver Mtukudzi Memorial Incident

At the memorial service for Oliver Mtukudzi, a mentor to Tight, the artist was denied the opportunity to perform. He blamed this on the “rich people” who were controlling the event.

Personal Relationships

His relationships have made headlines on more than one occasion. He referred to these instances as mistakes from his past but has since moved on.
