Obert Chari is a Zimbabwean musician and the leader of the band ZCC Hakireni Stars. He is best known for his 2017 hit song “Mebo.” The band’s other popular songs include “Ngoma Yemugidhi” and “Gombo.” Chari is a prominent member of the ZCC Mbungo Church.
Obert Chari was born in Negovano, Bikita. He attended Chada Primary School then after his Grade 7, he became a cattle herder. Chari completed his secondary education at Marirangwe High School, then went back to herd cattle. In 2009, Chari started attending Midlands State University. Chari is married and is a father of two.
Career
Chari began his musical journey by singing in various choirs at ZCC Mbungo. In 2012, he embarked on his own project and released his debut album titled “Ngoma Yababa.” Although his early albums did not achieve mainstream success, Chari continued to pursue his passion for music. The turning point in Chari’s career came with the release of the song “Mebo” in 2017. The accompanying music video, which was released in 2018, quickly went viral and gained widespread popularity. This catapulted Chari to the forefront of the music scene, and “Mebo” became a national hit.
Controversies
Chari was alleged to have been having an affair with Mebo. He denied any ties to the girl who acted as Mebo on the video, as they only met the day before the shoot in effort to find a replacement as the previous Mebo disappeared without reason.
