Legal Troubles, Arrest and Acquittal

Originally from Brazil, Mafra’s life took an unexpected turn when she was arrested alongside two Kuwadzana women on charges related to drug trafficking. Specifically, they were accused of possessing cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,932,000. The police received information that Mafra, who was allegedly part of a drug syndicate, was arriving in Zimbabwe from Brazil on Ethiopian Airways ET 873.

On April 2, the police acted on the tip and intercepted Mafra at the Robert Mugabe Airport. Subsequently, her alleged accomplices, Patience Murinda and Siegfried Zibusiso Ndlovu, were arrested and interviewed. However, during the course of the trial, Mafra and her alleged accomplice were discharged at the close of the State’s case, while Murinda was convicted of illegal dealings involving heroin.

Murinda received a seven-year prison sentence, with two years suspended on the condition that she does not commit a similar offence within the next five years, following a trial presided over by Magistrate Ignatio Mhene.  This means that only Murinda was sentenced to 5-years in prison, while Caroline Silver Mafra was acquitted.

At the time of her arrest Mafra was 23 years old.

Caroline Silver Mafra’s Continued Incarceration Despite Acquittal

Despite being acquitted of the drug charges, Caroline Silver Mafra remains in prison due to unforeseen circumstances. Her lawyer reportedly lost her passport, preventing her from returning to Brazil.
