This is the biography of Clemence Matawu a retired Zimbabwean professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He currently works as an administrator at Chicken Inn Football Club in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League.

Age

Clemence Matawu was born on 29 November 1982 in Bindura, Zimbabwe.

Education

Matawu grew up in Shamva and completed his education at Shamva Primary, Chipindura High, Hermann Gmeiner, and Churchill Boys High. He holds a Sports Science Degree from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).

Club Career

Matawu started his professional career with Motor Action in Harare. In early 2009, he joined Polish club Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała on loan, making 40 appearances across all competitions. In the summer of 2010, he moved to Ekstraklasa club Polonia Bytom but was released after a year and returned to Motor Action.

In 2013, Matawu joined Chicken Inn Football Club, playing until his retirement in 2020 at 38, following the Premier Soccer League (PSL) cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Matawu had a successful international career, making 29 appearances and scoring one goal for the Zimbabwe national team.

Matawu’s achievements include:

  • 2006 Soccer Star of the Year in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League
  • Appeared on the Soccer Stars list for a record six times
  • Won the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League with Chicken Inn in 2015
  • Finalist for the 2017 Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year

Stint as Warriors Team Manager

In September 2023, Clemence Matawu was appointed as the interim Zimbabwe Warriors team manager by the ZIFA Normalisation Committee, replacing Wellington Mpandare. This role was set to last until 30 June 2023.
