This is the biography of Douglas Mapfumo a professional footballer from Zimbabwe who currently plays as a striker for Polokwane City, a club in the DStv Premier League of South Africa.

Age

Douglas Mapfumo was born on March 1, 2000. His father’s name is Victor Mapfumo.

Career

Basketball Career

Douglas Mapfumo has not always been a footballer. He once represented Zimbabwe’s basketball national team while playing for Mabvuku Eastern Lakers.

Football Career

Douglas Mapfumo is a graduate of Legends Football Academy in Zimbabwe.

Mapfumo made his breakthrough in South Africa’s DStv Premier League without having played in Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League. In 2020, he joined Cape Umoya United in South Africa. Later, in 2021, he was signed by Cape Town City for the 2021 season. However, due to limited playing time, Mapfumo was loaned to Cape Town All Stars. He was officially released by Cape Town City in January 2022. Subsequently, he signed with Black Leopards in 2022 before joining Polokwane City for the 2023/24 season.

Unfortunately, in 2023, Mapfumo suffered a knee injury that prevented him from making his debut for the Zimbabwe senior national men’s football team. He was reportedly included in the initial squad for a match against the ZIFA Northern Region Division One Soccer League select.

Nationality

In April 2023, reports indicated that officials from the South African Football Association had approached Douglas Mapfumo’s camp. They offered assistance with the necessary paperwork to make him eligible for the South African senior national team.

In an interview with The Herald, Mapfumo’s father, Victor, confirmed these developments. He stated that his son had the opportunity to switch nationalities and potentially play for Bafana Bafana, the South African national team. However, Douglas still aspires to represent the Zimbabwean national team, the Warriors, and he intends to continue working hard and scoring goals to gain recognition.
