Leonard Mapfumo was born on 30 January 1983 in Highfields, Harare. At age 11, he moved with his family to Mbare. He attended Kudzanai Primary School until grade 7, when he moved to Mount Pleasant High School.
Mapfumo developed an interest in music at a young age and began experimenting with music production and songwriting as a teenager. His passion for music was evident early on, leading him to pursue a career in the industry.

Mapfumo’s professional music career began in the early 2000s, a period marked by the rise of the urban grooves genre in Zimbabwe. He joined Galaxy Entertainment, a recording company owned by Delani Makhalima.
He gained national recognition with the release of “Seiko,” a collaboration with Roki. The song’s success marked a turning point in his career. He quickly became one of the most prominent urban grooves artists in Zimbabwe.
Over the years, Mapfumo released several albums and singles, contributing to the growth of the urban grooves movement. His music is characterised by relatable lyrics and a blend of different musical styles. Some of his notable songs include “Maidei,” “Mvura,” and “Miss Makadini.”
His music often explores themes such as love, relationships, and social issues. To date, Mapfump has released five albums, namely ‘R & L’ (2005), ‘Namapfumo’ (2007), ‘The Journey’ (2010), ‘The Road to Israel’ (2014) and Access Point (2019).
Throughout his career, Leonard Mapfumo has collaborated with various artists in Zimbabwe’s music scene. His collaboration with Roki on “Seiko” remains one of the most memorable. He also worked with artists such as Rutendo Malomo, Sniper Storm, and Sanii Makalima.
