This is the biography of Lewis Uriri, a Zimbabwean lawyer practising as an Advocate (Barrister) at the de facto Harare Independent Referral Bar. He has represented notable clients such as Emmerson Mnangagwa, Sengezo Tshabangu, and Wicknell Chivayo. Additionally, Uriri holds the position of founding President at the Zimbabwe Inns of Court.

Education

Lewis Uriri holds degrees in Doctor of Laws, Masters in Business Administration, and Master of Laws.

Career as a Lawyer

Lewis began his career as an intern at Honey & Blanckenberg, Zimbabwe’s oldest law firm. He later joined the firm as an associate in 2001, eventually becoming a partner in 2003. During his tenure, he engaged in various legal matters, including civil rights, commercial transactions, and transnational litigation.

In September 2007, Lewis joined the de facto as an Advocate, serving on the Bar Council and the management executive committee of the Bar Association of Zimbabwe. He played a key role in establishing The Chambers in 2013 and contributed to the internationalization of the Bar by founding the Zimbabwe Inns of Court in 2017.

Lewis also served as an academic at the University of Zimbabwe, teaching in the Department of Private Law and the Department of Procedural Law. He holds positions such as Chairperson of the Faculty of Advocacy Trainers at the Zimbabwe Council for Legal Education and is a member of the Law Society of Zimbabwe Faculty of Advocacy Trainers.

Career as Football Administrator

Lewis Uriri chaired the board that guided CAPS United Football Club to their first league championship since 2015. His term as chairman expired on December 31, 2016, following CAPS United’s dissolution of their board of directors just two days after winning the league championship.

Appointment to ZBC Board

In January 2024, Uriri was appointed to the seven-member board of directors for the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), the State broadcaster.

Clients

Lewis Uriri’s prominent clients include Sengezo Tshabangu, Emmerson Mnangagwa, and Wicknell Chivayo. He exclusively takes on work through referrals from attorneys and Chartered Accountants, particularly in tax advisory matters. Uriri is also listed as an arbitrator at the Commercial Arbitration Centre in Harare and serves as one of Zimbabwe’s designated representatives on the International Committee for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) established by the World Bank. His areas of interest encompass investment law, business transactions law, commercial and corporate law practice, civil rights, and constitutional litigation. He has participated in legal proceedings in Zimbabwe, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and before regional and international tribunals.
