This is the biography of Tryson Chimbetu, a prominent Zimbabwean Dendera musician, who gained widespread recognition for his hit song “Mai Maria (Haisati Yapinda Yekedero).”
Background
Tryson was born into a musical family. His father, Naison Chimbetu, and his brothers, Simon Chimbetu, Allan Chimbetu, and Brian Chimbetu, formed the popular band Marxist Brothers in the 1980s. The group gained significant recognition and was considered one of the best bands in Zimbabwe at that time.

Siblings
Tryson’s younger brother, Wilmore Chimbetu, is a professional soccer player in the Premier Soccer League. Wilmore has also served as a backing vocalist for Tryson, and he occasionally covered for his brother at shows when Tryson was unable to attend.
Education
Tryson attended Glenview 1 High School, where he completed his secondary education. He got 9 points at A-level.
Music Career
While in high school, Tryson recognized his passion for music and began learning to play the guitar. He would carry his guitar with him and practice during his free time. In 2002, Tryson had a breakthrough in his music career when he toured Mutare with his father and shared the stage with accomplished musicians. Encouraged by his father, Tryson decided to pursue music seriously. In 2004, he joined his cousin Sulumani Chimbetu’s band, but the collaboration did not work out. Undeterred, Tryson persevered and successfully revived the Marxist Brothers in 2005. He released his debut album, “Marxist Revival,” in 2008, which received great acclaim from his fans.
Appointment as Red Cross Ambassador
In May 2013, Tryson Chimbetu was appointed as the Zimbabwe Red Cross (ZRC) humanitarian youth ambassador. His role was to advocate for youth empowerment, particularly among the less privileged. ZRC recognized Tryson’s commitment and support to Alick Macheso, who was also appointed as their humanitarian ambassador.
Financial Challenges
Since 2013, Tryson faced financial difficulties. On one occasion, his musical instruments were confiscated because he couldn’t pay a local transport company $300 for transporting the equipment to Guruve and Rushinga for shows. In March 2014, four members of his band, including the lead guitarist, a dancer, a sound engineer, and a security staffer, left him after not receiving payment for several months. It was reported that Tryson was earning less than $300 per show.

Overcoming Drug Addiction
Tryson Chimbetu openly acknowledged his struggle with drug addiction. In an interview with ZBC, he revealed that he has successfully overcome his addiction and is now on the path to recovery.
Wife and Children
In 2014, Tryson married Nyarai Makumba. They had been together for six years before tying the knot. They welcomed their first child, Naison (Jnr), in 2015.
