Education

During his time as a primary school pupil at Mahlathini in Cowdray Park, Chirinda played for a local team. He later joined Highlanders’ Under-13s in 2007, where he played alongside current Bosso player Godfrey Makaruse, Chicken Inn’s central defender Itai Mabhunu, and goalkeeper Wandile Ndlovu. Chirinda also trained at EM Sport Academy under Field “Stokee” Mlambo, progressing from the Under-15s to Division Three. Initially, Chirinda played as a goalkeeper for the juniors, but due to his height disadvantage, his coaches encouraged him to play in the field.

Club Career

In the lead-up to the 2024 season, Obriel Chirinda transferred to Ngezi Platinum Stars from Bulawayo Chiefs.

The reported value of the agreement ranged between US$20,000 and US$25,000.

There were reports suggesting that Chirinda had signed contracts with both Premiership rivals Dynamos and Ngezi Platinum Stars. In December 2023, Chirinda’s representatives allegedly met with Dynamos officials, and the striker agreed to join the club.

After Chirinda was officially unveiled as a Ngezi Platinum Stars player, Dynamos lodged a complaint with the Premier Soccer League. Dynamos claimed that they had a valid contract with Chirinda, having engaged in negotiations with the player and his management team. According to Dynamos, these negotiations took place with the knowledge of Bulawayo Chiefs FC, who even requested an offer for Chirinda’s services.

Dynamos Football Club stated that they were still negotiating the transfer with Bulawayo Chiefs when they learned about Bulawayo Chiefs FC’s dealings with another PSL club, which resulted in the public unveiling of Chirinda by the said club. Allegedly, Chirinda had already received the agreed-upon fees from Dynamos. However, another report mentioned that Dynamos had offered US$8,000 for Chirinda’s services, an offer that Bulawayo Chiefs declined. Chiefs informed Dynamos that they had reached an agreement with Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Chirinda has also played for Chicken Inn in the topflight league.

Additionally, he was a finalist for the Soccer Star of the Year award, finishing as the second runner-up.
