This is the biography of Wessly Madhevere, a Zimbabwean cricketer who plays as an all-rounder for the Chevrons. He made his international debut for the Zimbabwe cricket team in March 20202.
Early Life and Career
Wessly Madhevere was born on 4 September 2000 in Harare. He developed an interest in cricket from a young age and joined the Takashinga Cricket Club, where he received coaching and mentoring from former Zimbabwean players such as Tatenda Taibu and Prosper Utseya.
Madhevere was considered a prodigy and was drafted into the Zimbabwe Under-19 squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup at the age of 15. He also played in the 2018 and 2020 editions of the tournament, where he impressed with his batting and bowling performances. He became the vice-captain of the Zimbabwe Under-19 team for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Madhevere was the leading run-scorer for Zimbabwe in the tournament, with 304 runs in six matches.
Wessly Madhevere Domestic and International Career
Madhevere made his List A debut on 8 February 2020 for Mashonaland Eagles in the 2019–20 Pro50 Championship. He made his first-class debut on 20 February 2020 for Mashonaland Eagles in the 2019–20 Logan Cup. In February 2020, he was named in Zimbabwe’s One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) squads for their tour against Bangladesh.
He made his ODI debut for Zimbabwe, against Bangladesh, on 1 March 2020, scoring 35 runs and taking one wicket. Madhevere played his T20I debut for Zimbabwe, against Bangladesh, on 9 March 2020, scoring 14 runs and taking two wickets. In December 2020, he was selected to play for the Eagles in the 2020–21 Logan Cup.
In February 2021, he was named in Zimbabwe’s Test squad for their series against Afghanistan. He made his Test debut against Afghanistan on 2 March 2021, scoring 48 runs and taking two wickets. In March 2023, he was named in Zimbabwe’s ODI squad for their series against the Netherlands. On 23 March 2023 in the second ODI, he became the third cricketer from Zimbabwe to take a hat-trick in ODIs, dismissing Pieter Seelaar, Scott Edwards and Vivian Kingma in consecutive deliveries. Madhevere was suspended by Zimbabwe Cricket in December 2023 after testing positive for a banned recreational drug following an in-house doping test.
Wessly Madhevere Personal Life and Achievements
Madhevere married his childhood sweetheart, Rumbidzai Chikwana, whom he met at the Takashinga Cricket Club. They have a son named Tadiwa, who was born in 2022. He has won several awards and accolades for his cricketing skills, such as the Player of the Tournament at the 2019 Africa Under-19s World Cup Qualifier, the Rising Star of Zimbabwe Cricket in 2020, and the Man of the Match in the second ODI against the Netherlands in 2023.
