Tynwald High School Bus Accident

On 14 October 2022, a school bus from Tynwald High School crashed at Pine Tree Inn, close to Juliasdale in Nyanga. Of the 46 pupils and teachers from Tynwald School on board the bus, six children were confirmed dead, with five dying instantly and the sixth pronounced dead at Nyanga General Hospital. The seventh accident victim was a teacher who taught Geography and Sociology to Upper Six students. In addition, he was also the Environmental Management teacher for Form 3 students.

What Happened?

A survivor of the horrific accident revealed that the bus driver ignored pleas to reduce speed and subsequently failed to negotiate a sharp curve.

According to the survivor, the bus driver who was supposed to drive the students for the four-day trip to Nyanga was changed at the last minute.

“It was a dark day and I am still in shock,” said the student.

“To start with, school authorities changed the driver at the last minute.

“Uncle Chamu overtook a Honda Fit, swerved and lost control of the bus and hit two stones before it overturned.

“We had warned him against speeding, but he never took heed.

“I still can’t believe that I survived that horrific accident,” he told H-metro.

Driver On The Run

The Zimbabwe Republic Police finally arrested Tynwald High School driver Machimbidzofa Chamunorwa almost three weeks after he went into hiding following the Nyanga accident.

He was arrested in Harare after the police learned that he was going around expressing condolences to the parents of the deceased pupils through an intermediary. Reports say the driver only surfaced after the school froze his salary.
